Breast Reduction Eugene

If you have overly-large, heavy breasts, you know first-hand that bigger is certainly not always better.

A breast reduction can help women get smaller, lighter, and more aesthetically-pleasing breasts that are better suited to their natural proportions. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Kiya Movassaghi performs breast reduction surgery in Eugene to provide his patients with immediate relief from back, neck, and shoulder pain associated with excessive breast size. Breast reduction surgery also allows women to participate in the activities they love without worrying about their breasts limiting their range of motion.

Why should I have breast reduction surgery?

The decision to have breast reduction is entirely personal, and patients choose to have surgery for a variety of reasons. There is no requirement that you have a certain breast size before you can get a reduction, nor does breast reduction mean you have to get “small” breasts. While you have your own goals in mind, here are a few of the common reasons our patients choose to have breast reduction:

  • Relief from back, neck, or shoulder pain. Breast reduction can greatly reduce chronic discomfort caused by heavy, pendulous breasts.
  • Improved clothing and swimsuit options. Having very large breasts can limit what fits you well, and breast reduction can help you fill your closet with more comfortable, figure-flattering clothing.
  • A more active, unencumbered lifestyle. Many of our breast reduction patients enjoy running, dancing, and swimming, and having smaller, better-proportioned breasts allow them to participate in these activities with greater comfort and confidence.
  • A firmer, more aesthetically pleasing breast shape with improved symmetry. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, or aging can cause breast skin to stretch and sag. Having larger breasts can make this appear worse. A breast reduction lifts and reshapes the breasts and can reduce areola size, making it a popular option as part of a mommy makeover.

Dr. Movassaghi also performs breast implant removal and breast implant revision/exchange in Eugene.

Where will my breast reduction incisions be?

Plastic surgeons perform breast reduction using a variety of incision techniques, adjusting their approach based on the amount of excess breast tissue to be removed as well as the degree of sagging to be corrected. While breast reduction surgery will leave scars, these are typically easily concealed by a bathing suit top, and visible scarring will fade significantly over time with proper care. During your consultation, Dr. Movassaghi will discuss your incision options, which may include one of the following:

  • Vertical or “lollipop” incision. This involves one “peri-areolar” incision around the outer edge of the areola and one incision running vertically from the bottom of the areola to the crease underneath the breast. This is Dr. Movassaghi’s preferred breast reduction technique for patients requiring a modest breast reduction.
  • Inverted T or “anchor” incision. An incision is made along the crease underneath the breast (inframammary fold) in addition to the incisions used for the lollipop technique.
  • BMRT reduction. This stands for “Boston Modified Robertson Technique” and is an advanced breast reduction technique Dr. Movassaghi uses for patients who require very extensive breast reductions. This involves a peri-areolar incision as well as a horizontal incision in the bottom portion of the breast that results in a scar that is hidden in the lower curve of the breast.

“I am so pleased to have been referred to you, and I am already delighted with the results of my breast reduction. I will certainly recommend you highly!”

Breast reduction surgery & recovery in Eugene

Breast reduction surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia. Using the incision patterns discussed at your pre-surgical consultations, Dr. Movassaghi will remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin. He will then lift and reshape the new, smaller breast, moving the nipple/areola complex to a more youthful, aesthetically pleasing position. If needed, he will remove different amounts of tissue from each breast to achieve the closest symmetry possible between the breasts.

Following surgery, incisions are covered with light dressings, and the breasts are placed in a surgical bra to support the breasts during initial healing. While you will be fairly sore at first, discomfort should subside more each day and can be controlled with oral medication. Many patients return to a sedentary job about one week after breast reduction surgery, and more vigorous activity such as running, dancing or heavy lifting can usually be resumed within 4 to 6 weeks.

With proper care, scars will usually fade in 6 to 12 months. Surgery will probably reduce the ability to breastfeed.

Will insurance cover my breast reduction?

Breast reduction is not always covered by insurance; in many instances, it is considered cosmetic. In cases where a patient requires a very extensive breast reduction to relieve medically documented physical symptoms, some insurance plans may cover a portion of the costs. Our staff will assist you in obtaining pre-authorization if you would like to pursue insurance coverage. If your breast reduction is considered cosmetic, we encourage you to explore your options for financing your procedure. Our office staff can help you learn more about financing at your consultation.
