There’s Another New Lip Filler on the Market. Should I Switch Products?

patient receives volumizing lip injection with Restylane Kysse filler

Lip filler technology is improving with the goal of making the results look and feel as natural as possible. So, if your genetics didn’t give you the full lips you’ve always wanted, your lips have lost volume due to aging, or you just want a little more contour, lip fillers are a tried and true, safe choice for lip enhancement.

If you’re trying a lip filler for the first time or are curious about changing up the product you’ve been using, we’re excited to introduce the latest FDA-approved lip treatment in the Restylane® family of hyaluronic dermal fillers: Restylane® Kysse (pronounced kiss).

No matter what product you choose, at Ziba Medical Spa, we consider lip augmentation an art. Karen, our Nurse Injector, has specialized in aesthetic injections for more than eight years, backed up by her years of experience in surgical nursing.

How do lip fillers feel? Will Kysse feel different?

If your lip filler procedure is done correctly, your lips shouldn’t feel remarkably different after the swelling goes down. That said, some patients report their lips feel firmer to the touch—a quality some like, and others say feels a bit unnatural.

The formulation allows it to more fully integrate, so the gel flexes like natural lip tissue when you talk or smile (or kiss!).

Restylane’s Kysse answers the desire for a more supple feel. Kysse uses Restylane’s proprietary XpresHAn Technology™ (also known as Optimal Balance Technology) which delivers optimal flexibility once inside the lips. The formulation changes how hyaluronic acid HA binds inside the skin, allowing it to more fully integrate, so the gel flexes like natural lip tissue when you talk or smile (or kiss!). Since there’s always some discomfort that goes along with the injection, especially because the lips are a sensitive area, Kysse also contains lidocaine to help make the treatment more comfortable.

Which lip filler products work the best?

Which lip filler is “best” for you depends somewhat on the look you want. If you’re seeking a more voluminous, pouty look, å la Kendall Jenner, we often recommend Juvéderm products, including JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC, and JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC. Juvederm Volbella® XC is a particularly good choice for older patients who also want to add subtle volume and address vertical lip lines—known as perioral wrinkles or smoker’s lines.

Restylane® Silk is a popular lip enhancement treatment providing a more subtle result and also helps to correct wrinkles around the mouth. It is also infused with the anesthetic lidocaine to minimize pain during and after treatment.

Hyaluronic acid is a substance already found in your skin—think of it as the body’s internal moisturizer.

While all of these existing lip filler options have proven to be excellent, Kysse aims to surpass them with its more pliable, longer-lasting formula. If you’ve felt that the time your lip filler lasts or the feel of it has been wanting, Kysse may be the best lip filler for your needs.

One other reason you could be searching for a “better” lip filler product is because your lip injection results haven’t been up to par. But, getting beautiful lip filler results relies as much on the technique as it does on the product, and you may have to find a more qualified injector instead. Choose a provider with excellent aesthetic judgment, a deep technical understanding of lip and mouth tissues, and proven experience.

How does a hyaluronic lip filler work?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a substance already found in your skin—think of it as the body’s internal moisturizer. In simple terms, it’s a large sugar molecule that attracts and binds water molecules, which keep the skin hydrated and gives it volume. Lip fillers do their magic using an HA gel that when combined with water, swells to produce a smoothing/filling effect.

Who is qualified to give a lip filler injection?

Even though lip filler injections take just minutes to perform (that’s why they’re often called a “lunchtime” procedure), it’s vital to choose a skilled medical professional. Lip augmentation poses real risks, especially if the person giving the injection is inexperienced. Non-surgical filler treatment is considered a medical procedure that requires specific training, knowledge, and skill. Do your homework first—don’t be shy about asking to see previous patients’ photographs and specify that you want to look at photos of patients who had similar goals for their lip enhancement. At Movassaghi Plastic Surgery and Ziba Medical Spa, our nurse injector’s job is to listen to your wishes, offer her nuanced aesthetic advice, and explain the reasons she recommends one product over another.

How long do lip fillers last?

Since everybody metabolizes differently, the length of time varies but generally speaking lip filler treatments last between 3 – 6 months, with the exception of Kysse which in clinical trials, lasted up to 1 year. We tell our patients that the timeframe for how long a lip filler will last largely depends on physiology—over time, as the body absorbs the hyaluronic acid, the results will start to diminish—and on how long you are willing to let your results fade before having another treatment.

How much does Restylane® Kysse cost?

Restylane® Kysse lip filler costs about $800 per syringe although some patients only require a portion of a syringe, while others need up to two to get the results they want. During your consultation, your injector will be able to assess how much product will be required to achieve the results you seek and then provide an accurate estimate before treatment.

New products often claim to be more cost-effective when they come on the market, and that patients will spend less to get the results they want. There may indeed be some cost savings with Kysse vs. other lip fillers if Kysse lasts longer. In our experience, the price differences between comparable products are usually nominal and we advise our patients to focus instead on which formulation is best for them.

Are there any side effects associated with Restylane® Kysse Lip Filler?

All lip fillers have some mild side effects. Restylane® Kysse’s side effects were very similar to those seen with any other HA-based lip filler products. For most patients who took part in the clinical trials for Restylane® Kysse, side effects were mild or moderate, lasted 7 days or less, and included:

  • redness
  • pain/tenderness
  • firmness
  • swelling
  • lumps/bumps
  • bruising
  • itching
  • discoloration

What if I’m unhappy with the results?

The overwhelming majority of patients are satisfied with the results of their lip filler experience. However, if you’re really unhappy with the outcome you can have the filler dissolved using hyaluronidase. This enzyme melts away hyaluronic acid rapidly and safely. The Restylane® and Juvederm® products we use are all hyaluronic-acid-based lip fillers.
